Swami Sankarananda Saraswati waved to people driving along Highway 47 as he made his way into Washington. A monk, Saraswati is heading toward New Jersey to celebrate the birthday of Peace Pilgrim, who spent 28 years walking on a peace pilgrimage. An event is held each September in her home town of Egg Harbor. Saraswati said Peace Pilgrim is one of his inspirations. He began his own walk Jan. 1 in Pasadena, Calif. Missourian Photo.

Inspired by a woman known only as “Peace Pilgrim,” Swami Sankarananda Saraswati — dressed completely in orange garb — made his way through Washington Wednesday, June 11.
Saraswati, who waved to all passers-by as he headed toward Washington on Highway 47, began what could be called a peace pilgrimage Jan. 1, in Pasadena, Calif.
