With just over a week under her belt, Washington’s new librarian, Jackie Hawes, said she’s settling in to her new position.

Hawes took the place of Nell Redhage, who retired at the end of September.

Hawes said she was impressed with the city when she visited over Labor Day weekend and continues to be impressed with the city.

“I am loving Washington,” she said. “The library is amazing. It runs like a well-oiled machine.”

She added that the staff has been helpful in her transition and continues to help her learn new processes.

Hawes said she has enjoyed meeting members of the community, patrons and getting familiar with everyone.

She is looking forward to several upcoming events, including children’s events organized by Ruth McInnis, children’s librarian.

Hawes is the city’s sixth librarian.

Prior to coming to Washington, she served as a library coordinator for the Maysville Community and Technical College in Maysville, Ky.

Meet and Greet

The Washington Public Library board will host a welcome reception for Hawes Sunday, Oct. 20, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the library’s meeting room.

“We’re happy to have her here,” said Frank Suda, library board president. “She brings a lot of experience and energy to the job.”

Refreshments will be provided.
