Planning for the city of Washington’s 175th anniversary celebration is taking shape.
The planning committee met again Wednesday afternoon to work on finalizing an event schedule and service projects that will benefit the community.
Among the big events being planned are a 175th Red, White and Blue Ball to be held Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 — a similar event was held during the city’s sesquicentennial celebration, and a 175th Parade and Picnic scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday, May 24, 2014, which is the actual anniversary date.
The service projects are still being defined, but the committee has pledged financial support for the Lucinda Owens monument in Krog Park. Owens is the city’s founder.
Another project still under consideration is welcome signage at the entrances to the city.
In the near future, a donor letter will go out seeking funds to help support these events and projects, said Nadine Feltmann, committee co-chair. The other co-chair is Joe Schneider.
Already, a logo for the 175th birthday has been chosen.
A subcommittee is currently working on the invitation design for the ball, which will be held at the Washington Knights of Columbus Hall. A band also has been booked for that event, which will include a dinner.
The exact time of the parade has not been determined but it will likely be in the morning with the picnic immediately following at the city fairgrounds.
The committee hopes to have seven anchor floats that represent Washington, such as farming, industry and volunteerism, and plans to hold a contest to come up with the exact themes. Several bands and other entries are planned for the parade as well.
A grand marshal has not been determined yet, but committee member Marc Houseman, Washington Historical Society president, said descendants of Lucinda Owens and Elijah McLean have been contacted and are interested in participating.
The picnic will feature live entertainment, food and games. The entertainment lineup will include two local bands and possibly a battle of the band competition followed by a headliner act still to be decided.
