Washington residents Heidi and Greg Nuckolls will host a winetasting event to benefit Partners for Just Trade this Sunday, Nov. 3, from 3 to 5 p.m., at Balducci’s Winery, Augusta.

In addition to winetasting, the event will feature hors d’oeuvres and entertainment by Washington resident Cheryl Pecka.

Partners for Just Trade is a nonprofit, faith-based organization that builds partnerships between producers living in extreme poverty and consumers in North America.

As the daughter of a Presbyterian minister, Heidi Nuckolls has been involved in mission work her entire life. She has been on six short-term mission trips to some of the poorest countries in the Western hemisphere.

“It showed me that there are more people out there who don’t have than who do have in the world,” she said.

Nuckolls said middlemen pay artisans pennies for their work so they can resell the pieces and earn high profits.

Partners for Just Trade created a marketplace for the artisans.

The fair wages the artisans receive enables them to afford food, shelter and medicine for their families, to educate their children and to reclaim personal dignity so they may assert their economic, political and social rights, the Partners for Just Trade website says.

The group works with artisans from Peru, Haiti, Cambodia and Egypt.

Nuckolls is a board member with Joining Hands, which founded Partners for Just Trade.
