One of the inaugural Archbishop Robert J. Carlson Excellence In Communication awards was presented to the Miller family and Missourian Publishing Company Wednesday at a luncheon at the Cardinal Rigali Center in St. Louis County.

The other inaugural award was presented to Tony and Teresa Holman of the radio Covenant Network.

In making the presentations, Archbishop Carlson said the Archdiocese of St. Louis “recognizes and appreciates the important role of media in our local community.” He thanked all of the local communicators.

In announcing the award to the Miller family and the Missourian Publishing Co., the Archbishop said,

“The family’s publishing legacy started in July of 1937 when James L. Miller, Sr. (now deceased) acquired the Washington Missourian. Over the years, his sons, Bill, Tom, John and Jim, Jr., joined the operation in various capacities. While it has existed for more than 150 years, the Washington Missourian, now with editions in Union and St. Clair, has been owned and operated by the Miller family for 75 years. The company also publishes the Warren County Record, Senior LifeTimes and emissourian.com, an online publication, and prints our own St. Louis Review.”

Archbishop Carlson added: “Besides the Millers’ long list of publishing accomplishments, the thing I want to share with you now is how impressed I am by the way they have consistently reflected their faith, while maintaining journalistic integrity and objectivity. Over the years, the Miller family has been willing and eager to report on issues affecting the faith lives of those living in the communities they serve — everything from in-depth issues facing the Church to publicity for events at area parishes. As Catholics and members of St. Francis Borgia Parish and Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, the Miller family has supported these parishes and their schools for many years. They repeatedly receive awards for excellence in journalism and commitment to the community.”
