The International Association of Fairs and Expositions has challenged its members, including the Washington Town and Country Fair, to take part in its 2013 “Dream Big” initiative.

The goal of the program is to collectively donate 20 million pounds of food before the IAFE’s annual conference in December, according to Amanda Griesheimer, marketing director for the Washington Area Chamber of Commerce, which manages the Washington Fair.

Griesheimer said the Washington Fair Board will host food drives at this summer’s Music at the Market events and at the June Sunset on the Riverfront event.

“Those attending the events are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items with them,” she said.

Griesheimer said Fair Board representatives will be on hand to accept the donations.

Anyone donating five or more items will be entered into a drawing. Two winners will be drawn at each event.

Both winners will be awarded a pair of VIP passes for each of the 2013 Fair concerts — Justin Moore, REO Speedwagon, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Parmalee.

The first collection/giveaway night will be this Thursday, May 9, at the Music at the Market. The event will run from 5-8 p.m. at the Washington Farmers’ Market and will feature the music of the Rockin’ Lazy R Roadhouse Band, along with food from The Pasta House.

Montelle Winery will provide the featured wine and the specialty beer will be Boulevard’s 88 Acre Hoppy Wheat, the second-place finisher at last year’s Fair Brewfest.

Food collected through the Fair’s food drive events will go directly to local agencies.
