There will be three open seats on the Washington School Board in April 2014.

The terms of board President Scott Byrne, Jennifer Triplett and Brian Sumner will expire this spring.

Board members are elected to three-year terms.

Filing for the April election will open at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, at the district administration office, 220 Locust St. in Washington.

The last day for candidates to file is Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, at 5 p.m.

Regular filing hours following opening day will be from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The school district will be closed for winter recess at the close of business Friday, Dec. 20, through Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014. District offices will reopen at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 2.

Candidates must be U.S. citizens and resident taxpayers of the district, who have resided in Missouri for one year preceding the election.

Candidates also must be at least 24 years of age, not a registered sex offender, not serving a sentence or period of probation for a felony or a crime that if commited in Missouri would have been a felony, and never been convicted of or pled guilty to a felony misdemeanor under federal laws.

The seven-member school board sets district policies, selects the superintendent of schools, adopts the annual budget and determines the tax rate.

The board generally meets on designated Wednesday evenings during the school year and monthly during the summer.

Board meetings are held in the board room on the second floor of the district administration office, at 7 p.m.
