The City of Washington Parks and Recreation Department in conjunction with the Washington Fire Department will be conducting a prescribed burn (weather permitting) on the Riverfront Prairie this Friday, Nov. 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The area being burned may continue to smolder into the evening.

Staff will remain on site throughout the smoldering period and until the fire is fully extinguished.

The objective of this phase of the prescribed burn is to reduce fuel loads, limit woody plants, stimulate herbaceous vegetation, and promote vegetative diversity within the prairie.

During the burn, people may see smoke and open flames.

The burn will be conducted utilizing very specific fire prescriptions and methods to minimize negative impacts to the environment and to ensure firefighter and public safety. This burn will take place under a South, Southwest wind direction to push the fire and smoke to the North and Northwest and away from residences.

If the direction of the winds change (which can occur) the flames will be extinguished and any smoldering fuels will be cooled off to prevent the smoke from lingering.
