With the number on the thermostat climbing higher than it has nearly all summer, Washington School District Superintendent Dr. Lori VanLeer said parents do not need to worry about early school closings due to the heat.

Only two schools in the district — South Point Elementary and Fifth Street Elementary — do not have HVAC systems. Both schools, however, have window air-conditioning units.

VanLeer assured board members Wednesday that classrooms were cool despite soaring temps.

There are two classrooms at South Point that do not have window units, she said, but those students are meeting in the library or other open rooms.

VanLeer said school officials are keeping an eye on students during the afternoon bus route.

“We’re making sure kids are hydrated and we’re allowing water on the buses,” she said.
