The Washington City Council Monday night approved the purchase of a laser level to be used primarily in the parks department.

The winning bid came from Bobcat of St. Louis, in the amount of $20,925.

Earlier this year, the Washington Youth Sports Association pledged $7,500 toward the cost of a laser level to help improve city ball fields.

The parks department also budgeted $7,500 toward the cost.

The total is above the $15,000 budgeted, however, the department has realized savings of about $20,000 from other items purchased under the budgeted amount.

Although several companies expressed interest in bidding on the laser level equipment, only Bobcat of St. Louis submitted a bid by the deadline, Darren Dunkle, parks director, noted in a letter to the council.

The purchase will save the city money over time as it would cost $2,000 to $2,500 to have each of the city’s six fields leveled only one time, which nearly covers the cost of the level.

Dunkle said the fields will need to be leveled every year or every other year to have proper drainage.
