Final sealing work for streets on the annual Nova Chip program will begin this Wednesday and is scheduled for completion Thursday, according to Dan Boyce, city engineer.

The last streets to be sealed include Lafayette Street, from Fifth to Second; Front Street from Olive to Stafford; and Second Street from Elm to High Street.

Sealing work on those streets was delayed while concrete work was finished.

N.B. West Contracting Company, which was awarded the $409,864.10 bid, pulled from the job to complete another job while the concrete work was completed.

The company completed sealing other streets earlier this year.

The annual maintenance program involves sealing cracks, then applying an ultra-thin bonded wearing surface, Nova Chip, over existing pavement.

The city has been using the Nova Chip method for a number of years. It replaced the old chip and seal method which drew complaints from motorists.

Since passage of the half-cent transportation sales tax, the city typically has allocated approximately $300,000 annually to seal various streets based on their conditions.
