The Franklin County Area United Way will host its first “Piano Jam: An Audience Participation Dueling Piano Event” Saturday, July 20, from 7 to 11 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Center.

The event will feature professional pianists from Spanky Entertainment, according to Kim Strubberg, United Way executive director.

“The show will include all music genres, from 40s big band to rap, classic rock and country all in one fun evening,” she said. “The United Way doesn’t really host any activities during the summer so we wanted to try something new to invite the community to.”

Strubberg said audience members will be able to request their favorite songs or artists and the piano players will rock them out on two baby grand pianos.

“The audience participation goes beyond requests, as guests are welcome to join the performers on stage to belt out their favorites or pay to have someone else come up,” she said. “We’ll also be selling glow bracelets where people can ‘buy’ themselves out of going up on stage.”

A photo booth also will be set up.

“We don’t know what to expect our first year, but if it goes over well, this is something we would like to make an annual event,” Strubberg said.

Tickets are available by calling the Franklin County Area United Way at 636-239-1018 or from any United Way board member.

Tickets are $20 each, or $150 for a table of eight if purchased in advance. Individual tickets are $25 at the door. Light snacks will be provided and there will be a cash bar with beer and wine. People may bring in their own snacks as well.

All proceeds from the Piano Jam will benefit the 48 agencies and programs of the Franklin County Area United Way.

The United Way will kick off its 2013 campaign Sept. 3. This year’s goal will be announced at a kick-off breakfast for corporate sponsors later this summer.

The 2012 campaign raised just over $1 million.
