Downtown Washington Inc. learned Tuesday it will receive a $9,074 festival grant from the Missouri Arts Council (MAC).

Aimee Frey, event coordinator, said the money will be split evenly between the organization’s “Big 3” events — the Art Fair and Winefest, Main Street BBQ and Bluesfest, and the Fall Festival of the Arts and Crafts.

“We’re really excited about the grant and it will be put to good use,” Frey told The Missourian.

Frey submitted the 10-page grant application this past February. She was required to describe each event and its artistic qualities, community involvements and management.

“The MAC has nine anonymous jury members who look through each application and the supporting materials to make recommendations on who should receive grants,” she said.

“The judges’ comments were included with the letter notifying us of the grant and they were very complimentary of the events, especially the community involvement,” she added.

One of the judges commented that the “three events provide a comprehensive, engaging and quality arts experience for the residents of Washington. Care has been taken to keep things engaging and relevant.”

Another said the “broad support from city agencies and downtown businesses” is a real strength.

Downtown Washington Inc. has received grants from the arts council in the past as well.

The grant amounts are based on a funding formula using the application’s average score, request amount and available MAC funding. For Fiscal Year 2014, the council awarded nearly $4.5 million to 336 grantees.
