Washington School District officials said the last day of school is now set for Wednesday, June 4, which will be a modified day for all students.

Superintendent Dr. Lori VanLeer said if the district misses one more day, students will be back in class April 21, the Monday after Easter.

“But that would be it with any more calendar adjustments,” VanLeer told The Missourian Monday. “We are not required to make up any additional snow days.”

District administrators have reviewed the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) inclement weather forgiveness guidelines while determining the calendar adjustments.

According to the guidelines, districts are responsible for making up the first six inclement weather days. If additional school days are lost, districts are required to make up every other inclement weather day.

The total number of makeup days cannot exceed 10 days. To date, Washington has had 12 inclement weather days, resulting in a total of nine makeup days.

The district has changed three modified days to full school days — Feb. 19, March 14 and March 19.

VanLeer said this was done to add instructional time for students, but will not count toward the required make-up days.

According to the DESE guidelines, there is not a provision in the law to make up inclement weather days by adding minutes or hours to the end of the school day.

All regularly scheduled early release days will remain unchanged, VanLeer noted.
