Preparations for the 2013-14 school year are well under way, according to Washington School District Superintendent Dr. Lori VanLeer.

Numerous projects are making progress, such as the outdoor athletic complex overhaul at Washington High School, and others will get started very soon, VanLeer said.

“We had a construction meeting Tuesday morning on the outdoor complex and it is progressing nicely and is on schedule,” she said. “We will start to see the carpet (turf) go down within the next two weeks.

“The D-zones are looking great, as the track event areas are getting close to being completed,” she added. “The sidewalk is poured and the entry way will get started soon. It all looks good so far and I am very pleased with Byrne and Jones, the general contractor.”

The project is expected to completed by early September in time for the football season. The band and P.E. classes also will be able to utilize the field.

VanLeer said ground will be broken this month on the new Early Childhood Center to be built on the Washington West Elementary campus.

“The contracts are signed and delivered,” she said.

The center is scheduled to open next school year.

The Augusta HVAC project also is progressing on schedule, said VanLeer, who visited the site this week.

VanLeer said insurance information packets are going out to staff this week and informational meetings are planned to explain changes.

A mailing also will go out to all staff later this month with information about back to school details and events, she said.

Sophomore and new elementary student registration is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 5. The next day, Tuesday, Aug. 6, will be freshman and seventh-grade registration.

On Wednesday, Aug. 7, registration will be held for seniors and eighth-grade students. Registration for juniors is Thursday, Aug. 8.

The first day of school for all students in the district is Tuesday, Aug. 20. Teachers will return prior to that to prepare their classrooms and attend meetings.

VanLeer said she’s working on administrator leadership goals, advisory team schedules and agendas, for the new year, as well as the focus group follow-up meeting schedule and letters to those who participated.

Other work includes developing the agenda and gathering materials for a support staff supervisor workshop, reviewing revisions for support staff performance evaluations, and developing the agenda for a principal workshop in August.

Budget analysis is ongoing and tax levy options also are being studied, VanLeer said, along with Missouri House Bill 253 which could impact funding for public school districts.
