The Union Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a unique sporting event in the city in September.
For the first time, the city is hosting a vintage base ball game Saturday, September 22. The game will be played at Veterans Memorial Park, located at 600 Progress Parkway.
The vintage game will be a throwback to how the sport was played in the 1860s. Two St. Louis vintage base ball teams will face off at this free community event.
The event will start at 10 a.m. with an ice cream social. The national anthem is scheduled to start at 10:55 a.m. The St. Louis Brown Stockings will take on the St. Louis Unions beginning at 11 a.m.
The Proclamation Brass quintet will play music throughout the game.
Concessions will be available for purchase. Guests are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket to enjoy the game.
The game will be played under vintage rules. Base ball, as it was called at the time, was a game played by gentlemen, and good manners were expected. Players did not wear gloves, and balls and strikes were generally not called unless the batter (called the striker) appeared to be delaying the game.

The game is weather dependent. The city may cancel the game at any time because of weather conditions or other factors.
