Union R-XI athletes and activity members were recognized Wednesday night at the February meeting of the school board for outstanding academic achievement.

Athletic Director Dan Ridgeway announced at the meeting that 14 of Union’s 15 teams earned a team grade-point average of 3.0 or higher, meaning almost every team or activity earned the Missouri State High School Activities Associations Academic Achievement award.

The GPAs were taken from the fall semester. Each student’s overall GPA contributes to the overall average.

“The fact that we’re able to be this successful here really speaks to the collaborative effort of our parents and students and our teachers working with our students,” Ridgeway said. “Our coaches and our teachers and our parents are all working together to really emphasize the classroom as well.”

The team or activity with the higher GPA was the UHS women’s volleyball team, who collectively earned a 4.1 grade point average.

“We want to win state championships, there’s no doubt about that but there is a reason we’re in school and it’s not just about sports,” Ridgeway said.

School Board President Virgil Weideman said it was good to see Union’s activities and athletics excel on their teams and also academically.

“It’s impressive. Not only do we like to see our teams do well in their sports, but to have them do well academically is a super bonus,” Weideman said.

Ridgeway noted that 10 more teams and activities will be evaluated for the winter activities and sports.
