A Union man was seriously injured when he was struck by vehicle while attempting to cross Washington Avenue in Union Thursday evening just after 7:15 p.m.

According to Union Police, Ronald W. Nieman, 40, attempted to cross the roadway eastbound when he was struck by a 1998 Dodge Ram being driven by Greg M. Garlock, 60, Union.

Garlock swerved to avoid the pedestrian, but was unable to avoid striking him, police said.

Nieman was transported by air ambulance to Mercy Hospital St. Louis.

According to police, Nieman was not wearing reflective clothing and allegedly had been drinking alcohol.

North Washington Avenue was closed for approximately three hours as police investigated the incident.
