Parks Director Angela Sullivan said her first three weeks with the city have been “fantastic.”

“I’ve been taking the time to get acclimated with the parks, facilities, my co-workers and community members,” she said, adding that she’s met most of the park board members.

Sullivan said during her park visits, she’s talked to patrons about what they think of the parks, things they like and ideas for potential improvements or concern.

She also attended her first special event, the city’s Picnic in the Dark eclipse viewing event Monday, Aug. 21.

“It was a really nice welcoming,” she said. “I got to see everyone come out to the park and be respectful to each other and the parks and have a good, family fun day.”

Sullivan transferred her Rotary club membership, organized her office and has settled in to her new space.

“This is a very warm and inviting community,” she said. “I love going to the parks and seeing residents and visitors being respectful of park property and enjoying it. You can tell they are proponents for our open spaces and playgrounds.”

Sullivan thanked the parks crew for maintaining the parks, as well as keeping them safe and clean for community members to enjoy.

The new director joined the city from Jerseyville, Ill., where she served as director of parks from 2011 until coming to Union.

Sullivan replaced Kevin Arand, who retired at the end of July after nine years with the city.

She began work with the city Monday, Aug. 14.
