Ground was broken Friday on the future Frick’s Market in Union that will feature an expanded deli and other amenities.

The new store will include a mezzanine and outdoor patio seating. There will be drive-through where customers can order deli items.

Frick’s Market is relocating from Locust Street to a new larger facility at Church Street and Central Avenue. The new store is slated to open spring of 2014.

The new facility will be about 34,000 square feet, compared to the current 21,000-square-foot building. It will have a 164-parking space lot, which is nearly double the number of spaces at the Locust Street location.

There will be an “old time” theme with each department front featuring a unique theme.

Frick’s Market has been serving the Union community for over 50 years, according to Jennifer and Darren Newbanks, part of the store ownership group.

“We’re so proud and happy to be able to be a part of the Union community and provide fresh foods and essentials for our customers,” Jennifer Newbanks said. “We simply outgrew our current location, but knew we wanted to remain close to the downtown area.”

The new store also will include high-efficiency cooling, refrigeration and lighting, which will help conserve energy.

“We feel it’s important to continue to provide quality and service like it used to be,” Newbanks added. “We couldn’t do this without the great support of the Union community, and its elected officials.”

Cochran of Union is providing architectural, interior and engineering services. Site work will be conducted by Vernaci Construction. Financing is being provided by the Bank of Sullivan.
