City officials are seeking input from residents of State Street in regards to eliminating parking on one side of the street.

The city’s parks, building, development and public service committee last week agreed to ask residents along State Street to weigh in on the proposal to change parking on the street.

A discussion was prompted by narrow street widths along East State Street between Oak Street and Washington Avenue, and on West State Street between Clark Drive and Lindner Lane.

According to Police Chief Norman Brune there are three options to address narrow street widths along State Street, the first is to do noting.

He added that street parking could be limited to the north side, or to the south side.

“Citizen input on this subject would be greatly appreciated,” Brune said.

Anyone who wants to give feedback changing parking rules on State Street can attend the city’s parks, building, development and public service committee meeting Monday, March 17, at 6 p.m. in the lower level of Union City Hall.

“I know State Street is a problem,” said Mayor Mike Livengood. “I don’t want to be the one to make the decision.”

There have been talks of limiting parking on State Street for several years. A cul-de-sac was built on the west end of the street to limit some traffic traveling on the road.

Narrow Streets

The discussion on limiting parking on State Street is part of a larger effort to eliminate parking on several narrow streets in Union.

The parks, building, development and public service committee already is recommending that parking be limited on four streets.

The recommendations are:

• Make Denmark Road — No parking on both side of the street from Prairie Dell Road to the Outer Road;

• Lindner Lane — No parking on the west side of the road from State Street to Main Street;

• North Church Street — No parking on both sides of the street from Independence Drive to CC Camp Road; and

• Old Highway 50 — No parking on both sides of the street from the east junction to the west junction.

During next month’s meeting, the committee also is poised to discuss making Mulberry Street a one-way street from Main Street south to Locust Street.

There may also be parking limitation on Mulberry Street between State Street and Cherry Street, and Locust Street to Springfield Avenue.

Committee members also are expected to discuss street parking changes on North Christina Avenue from State Street to Water Street.
