There are several new events planned for the 2013 Franklin County Fair, including a barbecue contest, and a Fair kickoff parade.

Fair Chairman Eric Schmuke said the new attractions are in response to fairgoers who asked for fresh events.

“We have heard over the last few years that this is the same Fair as always — so we are adding new activities and events,” he said.

The Fair runs from Thursday, July 11, through Sunday, July 14.

Fair Board members said they are hoping to start a new tradition with a parade this year.

It will be held Sunday, July 7, and will be followed by a dance at the fairgrounds.

“We have been hearing a lot of good response about the parade and dance so we are expecting a pretty big turnout,” Schmuke said.

The parade will start at 6 p.m. at Union City Hall. It will travel west on Locust Street, north on Church Street and west on Main Street. The parade will go to Washington Avenue where it will go north to Park Avenue where it goes west. The parade ends at the fairgrounds.

The band Loose Change will be playing until 10 p.m., and food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Tickets are on sale throughout the county and are $35 until July 11, and $40 at the gate for adults and $25 for children. There is no cost for children under 5.

Other New Events

Safety Day and First Responders Show will be Thursday, July 11, on the middle school practice field starting at 4 p.m. There will be helicopters, fire trucks, and many other first responders from around the county. Also on hand will be ambulances personnel, members of the Franklin County Narcotics Enforcement Unit, and the Franklin County SWAT team.

Mercy Hospital will be fitting and giving away bike helmets to the first 60 children who show up to the event.

There will be a Mid-Missouri Off-Roaders Mud Run 5 p.m. Friday, July 12.

The Fair, along with the St. Louis Barbecue Society, will be hosting a barbecue contest Saturday, July 13. Those who would like to compete in the event can contact Schmuke at 314-640-2532 or go to www.FCYF.org or www.stlouisbbqsociety.com. The cost is $5 to try the food and vote for a winner.

Also on Saturday, a National Federation of Professional Bullriders bull ride event will take place at 6:30 p.m. A mechanical bull, velcro wall, and obstacle course will be available from 2-8 p.m.

There will be a talent show this year in the Family Pavilion Sunday, July 14, for ages 5-18. For an application to participate, people may go to the Union Chamber of Commerce office, located at 103 S. Oak St. Union.

Also new this year in the Family Pavilion we will scavenger hunts and water balloon dodge ball.

This year, people may preregister for the pig scramble and super farmer contest. Registration forms are available at the Union, St. Clair and Sullivan Chamber of Commerce offices or at www.fcyf.org.
