There are several new events planned for the 2013 Franklin County Fair, including a barbecue contest, and a Fair kickoff parade.

Fair Chairman Eric Schmuke said the new attractions are in response to fairgoers who asked for fresh events.

“We have heard over the last few years that this is the same Fair as always — so we are adding new activities and events,” he said.

The Fair runs from Thursday, July 11, through Sunday, July 14.

Fair Board members said they are hoping to start a new tradition with a parade this year.

It will be held Sunday, July 7, and will be followed by a dance at the fairgrounds.

“We have been hearing a lot of good response about the parade and dance so we are expecting a pretty big turnout,” Schmuke said.

The parade will start at 6 p.m. at Union City Hall. It will travel west on Locust Street, north on Church Street and west on Main Street. The parade will go to Washington Avenue where it will go north to Park Avenue where it goes west. The parade ends at the fairgrounds.

The band Loose Change will be playing until 10 p.m., and food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Tickets are on sale throughout the county and are $35 until July 11, and $40 at the gate for adults and $25 for children. There is no cost for children under 5.
