The city is less one storm siren while the warning device is repaired and relocated.

City Administrator Russell Rost said the siren had been located at the Union Firehouse No. 1 off Springfield Avenue, but will be moved to city property near the water tower on the western part of Union.

He noted that repairs are being made to the siren and the city is waiting for electrical work to be done at the new site, and is looking for a pole to mount the siren.

There is about $2,500 worth of repairs being conducted on the siren.

According to Rost those who live in the area who would hear that siren can still hear other sirens.

“I’ve been up there and I can hear some of the other sirens,” he said.

He added that the best way for residents to stay informed is through the city’s CodeRED emergency notification system.

“We’re working our way to getting it fixed, but I strongly recommend people sign up for CodeRED,” said Rost. “That is the primary source for storm notifications.”

CodeRED

The alert system notifies residents through a phone call of severe weather, other emergencies or important announcements.

Rost said that some residents would prefer not to receive phone calls for each severe weather situation, but users can pick and choose when they are notified.

Four years ago, the city began using CodeRED and in 2011, the fire district entered into a joint agreement with the city to offer the service to its residents.

CodeRED receives weather broadcasts from the National Weather Service (NWS), while en route to television and radio stations.

Those within the fire protection district, which encompasses all of the Union city limits, can sign up at the city’s website, www.ci.union.mo.us, or at the fire district’s website, www.unionfd.org.

Sign-up is free and is only required with one of the entities.

The city’s severe weather alert calls are triggered by the NWS.
