The newly hired Union Area Chamber of Commerce director said she is ready to “jump in with both feet.”

Aimee Frey, who is now the Downtown Washington Inc. event director, accepted the position Tuesday night by the Chamber board of directors.

She begins her new position Monday, July 15. There will be a meet and greet at T’S Liquor Lane from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 16.

“I grew up in Franklin County, so I always look forward to doing things to give back to the community,” Frey said. “Union is doing such exciting things — I am happy to contribute and be a part of it.”

Frey, 30, of Washington, has worked at Downtown Washington Inc. for eight years. She told The Missourian that she intends to relocate to Union.

Frey replaces Tammy Stowe, who took a position at East Central College. Stowe served as Chamber director for more than 11 years.

Frey added that she already has begun thinking of fresh ideas for the Chamber.

“Since I found out I was going to be interviewed, my wheels have constantly been turning thinking of new ideas and new community events,” she said.

Her first step as director will be to meet with business owners. She also plans to explain to members of the community the role of a Chamber and how it can benefit them.

“No matter how much you get the word out some people still don’t know what a Chamber of Commerce is about,” Frey said.

Duties of the Chamber director include coordinating all Chamber events and meetings, membership growth and retention, representation at civic and community events, media and news communication, budgeting, financial reporting and staffing.

Frey has a bachelor’s degree in communications with an emphasis in public relations and special events from University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.

The work she has done with Downtown Washington Inc. has given her experience that will be useful at the Union Chamber.

“That is a membership organization too, we work with the Chamber and city,” Frey said. “I am ready to jump in with both feet, and I think my experience (Downtown Washington) will help me do that.”

Frey urged people to visit the Chamber’s redesigned website at www.unionmochamber.org.

“The new website has made its debut and people should check that out,” Frey said. “It looks very nice.”

The next major event will be the Sunrise Scramble golf tournament, which is scheduled for Friday, July 19. Chamber members, as well as the public, are encouraged to form a team and take part.

There are plans to hold the Long Haul Barbecue and Service Award later this year. The event is typically held in June.
