Union R-XI School District is moving forward with a multimillion dollar construction project that will include major improvements to three elementary schools, the middle school, high school and the central office.

The board of education approved 6-0 to enter into a contract with Cooperating School Districts (CSD), a cooperative purchasing group that provides school districts and political subdivisions of the state of Missouri and Southern Illinois with products and services at discounted prices.

Scope of Work

The project, which is slated to begin in the next couple of months, broadly includes roof replacement, tuck-pointing, windows and doors, concrete work, guttering, waterproofing and a new heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system.

Joe Brazil, senior field adviser with Tremco, the company hired through CSD to evaluate the scope of work for the project, estimated the total cost not to exceed $6,005,747, which Superintendent Steve Bryant said was a lower estimate than initially expected.

“That’s the beauty of doing this altogether as one project,” he said. “Some of the overhead costs go down.”

The money for the project will come from an $8 million no-tax increase bond issue voters passed earlier this month.

Clark-Vitt Elementary

Work at Clark Vitt will include roofing and gutters, window replacement, tuck-pointing, caulking and waterproof for a total not to exceed $915,230.

The price of the project also will include new metal exterior doors, entry vestibule doors, gym doors, and approximately $135,000 for a new HVAC system.

Union Middle School

At the middle school, the roofing will be replaced and/or repaired, new guttering, all windows replaced and the building will be tuck-pointed, caulked and waterproofed for a total not to exceed $1,895,638, which also includes $150,000 for the HVAC system.

Union High School

The scope of work at the high school includes roofing and gutters, new windows, tuck-pointing, caulking and waterproofing, as well as a new glass enclosure in the main hallway and a $110,000 HVAC system. The total price for the high school is estimated not to exceed $1,999,125.

Beaufort Elementary

At Beaufort, the total cost estimate, not to exceed $918,000, will include roofing and gutters, new windows, tuck-pointing, caulking, waterproofing and also new exterior, vestibule and gym doors. The building also will get new concrete and a new French drain in the front of the building, as well as a new $215,000 HVAC system.

Central Elementary

Central came in as the least expensive project with a bid not to exceed $277,000, which includes restoring existing roofing, window replacement, tuck-pointing, caulking and waterproofing.

Administration Building

The only work to be done at the administration building is a new roof estimated not to exceed $7,500.

Other Work

Bryant said the remaining money from the bond issue will be used for new technology infrastructure, some added school safety measures, such as surveillance cameras and locking systems, as well as some other construction and repairs at the schools.
