A Sullivan man died on Saturday morning after he was involved in a three-vehicle accident on Interstate 44 in Phelps County.
Fifty-year-old John O'Neal was killed in the crash that occurred at 1:09 a.m. on Nov. 3 in the westbound lanes of I-44. According to the Missouri Highway Patrol's online report, O'Neal was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of the interstate at about mile marker 190 when the crash occurred.
The patrol stated O'Neal was driving a Buick Century in the wrong direction on the highway when a westbound 2001 Freightliner driven by Orville J. Hess, 65, of Salem, Ill., tried to avoid the oncoming car by swerving to the right and driving off the highway. The Buick struck the trailer of the semi and overturned.
O'Neal, who was not wearing a safety belt, was ejected and later pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash also involved a second semitrailer, a 2005 Freightliner driven by Ranjit S. Pelia, 24, of Winton, Calif. The patrol stated Pelia, also traveling westbound on I-44, attempted to avoid the accident by driving off the right side of the road.
The two semitrailers also overturned.
Pelia suffered minor injuries.
