St. Clair will be represented in the National 9-Ball Doubles Championship later this spring as two VFW members recently won the regional tournament.
Members of the St. Clair American Poolplayers Association League participated in the Heartland American Pool Players Association Regional 9-Ball Doubles tournament Jan. 20 in Leslie.
The St. Clair VFW team played in the tournament where eight members participated. Teams from the Heartland region such as Franklin, Crawford and Jefferson counties competed in the event.
The last doubles game of the tournament featured St. Clair VFW Cmdr. James Myers and auxiliary member Mike Miller. They finished on top, which earned them a spot in the upcoming National 9-Ball Doubles Championship, April 25-26 in Las Vegas, Nev.
As part of their winnings, the APA will pay their airfare, as well as the entry fee for the event. The doubles championship in Las Vegas will host teams from all across the United States. The winning team will take home a prize of $3,500.
St. Clair League
Currently, the American Poolplayers Association runs a league in St. Clair on Tuesday nights. Teams from the VFW, American Legion and Blondie’s Bar and Grill compete with one another in 9-Ball.
According to Myers, the new league has been very successful to date.
“We used to travel to a different town every week to compete. Now that we have our own league right here in St. Clair, we are always home and playing where we know everyone. It’s been a lot of fun,” Myers said.
The APA is kicking off its spring session for the St. Clair league and the association is looking to add more teams from local businesses and organizations.
“It’s been good for business at the VFW post and we hope to get more folks involved as we continue to grow,” Myers said.
Anyone who is interested in joining a team or starting their own team can contact APA representative Mark Berger at 573-953-8655.
“St. Clair has always been very competitive in pool and has a lot of local talent in both 8 and 9 Ball competition,” Berger said.
“It only stands to reason St. Clair will have represresentaion at nationals in Vegas.”
