Stephanie K. Landing, Active Duty Air Force, was recently promoted from captain (O-3) to major (O-4) on Nov. 1.
Maj. Landing joined the Air Force on Dec. 8, 1999, to travel the world, get a higher education, and most importantly, serve her country.
Prior to joining the Air Force, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater from the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and performed in nine college and community theater shows in the Kansas City area. She spent the first eight years of her career as a pharmacy technician, and was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base (AFB), Miss. and McGuire AFB, N.J.
While enlisted, she served on the Keesler AFB Honor Guard for two years, in which she won Honor Guard Airman of the Quarter and was nominated for Honor Guard Airman of the Year. She also was named the United States Air Force Airman Pharmacy Technician of the Year in 2001.
As a non-commissioned Officer (NCO), she was awarded the 305th Medical Support Squadron NCO of the Year in 2004 at McGuire AFB, N.J. As a staff sergeant, she had the opportunity to be an extra Honor Guard member in the movie “Taking Chance.”
She also was selected to play keyboards for the entertainment unit of the Air Force, Tops in Blue. To date, 2005-2006 has been the most exciting year of her military career. That year, she had the opportunity to entertain 250,000 Air Force members and their families during 126 performances at 41 locations throughout 27 countries in support of Operations Joint Guardian, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom. This was her chance to perform, travel the world, and also improve morale for military members and their families.
After touring with Tops in Blue, she completed her master’s in human resources administration from Central Michigan University and applied for Officer Training School (OTS).
Landing received her commission from OTS on March 12, 2008, and was selected to be a Force Support Officer (Human Resources/HR). Since then, she has held nine HR positions, won five annual awards, and been an extra (military member) in the movies “Iron Man 2” and “Transformers 3.”
Landing also was fortunate to perform in 11 community theatre shows throughout her 18 year career. Her duty assignments include: Keesler AFB, Miss.; McGuire AFB, N.J; Los Angeles AFB, Calif.; Royal Air Force, Lakenheath, UK; Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan; MacDill AFB, Fla.; Fort Hamilton, N.Y.; and next assignment to Soto Cano Air Base, Honduras.
Landing’s major awards and decorations include: Joint Service Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Recognition Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Air Force Expeditionary Service Ribbon with Gold Border, and Basic Military Training Honor Graduate.
