Two Springfield residents were seriously injured after a five-vehicle crash Monday night, Dec. 18, on Interstate 44 near mile marker 244.

At 6 p.m., Brad L. Hagy, 28, Owensville, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Suburban westbound on I-44 when he struck the rear of a 2000 Ford Mustang driven by Jason M. Wages, 39, Springfield, according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol preliminary report

The crash caused Wages’ vehicle to travel off the left side of the road and through the median cable barriers.

Wages’ vehicle then traveled west in the eastbound lane and struck two other vehicles including a 2013 Dodge Avenger driven by Melissa Barber, 40, Springfield, and a 2014 Kenworth Conventional driven by Wade R. Edwards, 60, Depauw, Ind.

Debris from Wages’ vehicle struck the front of a 2016 Freightliner Conventional driven by Jaspreet Singh, 25, Surry, British Columbia, the patrol said.

Wages and Barber were transported to Mercy Hospital St. Louis by air ambulance.

Wages was the only driver not wearing a seat belt, the patrol said.

That portion of I-44 was closed for about three hours, according to Fire Capt. Dan Cooley.
