A new salon and barbershop opened this past week replacing Hershel’s Barbershop off Main Street.
Hershel Whited recently closed his barbershop due to retirement. When approached by Whited to take over the shop, Tiffany Henderson and her boyfriend Jeremy Stormer took the opportunity.
Sophisticuts Salon and Barbering caters to both men and women, according to Henderson.
“The main reason why I wanted to do a salon and barbershop is because I feel like I’m more like the jack of all trades,” Henderson said.
“I don’t like just one thing, I like diversity, and I like to do everything pretty much equally.”
She added that she also styles ethnic hair, which is something not many stylists in the area do.
“They just don’t do ethnic hair because they’re not used to working with it, but I’m definitely going to do that,” Henderson said.
In addition, she will also offer products for all hair types in the future so that customers will not have to travel to other cities such as St. Louis.
“I’m just kind of slowly opening up and growing, and then we’re going to invest in product,” Henderson said.
Henderson has been a hairstylist for five years and she is currently working on a barber certification at Eclips Barber School in Overland.
“I’m getting certified to do the straight razor shaves,” Henderson said.
Before she became a stylist, Henderson previously served in the Navy from 2007 to 2011. She was a boatswain’s mate and an operations specialist stationed in Norfolk, Va.
“I drove the ship. The officers would tell us what course to steer on and we would drive the ship.
“I would make sure the ship wouldn’t run into other little boats and other ships,” Henderson said.
She grew up in Steelville before moving to the Franklin County area. She currently resides in St. Clair with her 4-year-old daughter Aubrey.
The shop offers $10 haircuts to service-men and -women. With a purchase of a hair service, Henderson is offering a complimentary hot towel facial and scalp massage from now until the end of January.
Eventually, Henderson said she would like to offer facials, manicures and pedicures to customers. Additionally, Henderson said customers are offered complimentary wine and beer.
While customers wait for their appointment, customers can play pool for 50 cents.
