A former Navy captain made a special visit to St. Clair R-XIII School District Monday morning.
Last fall, the school board approved a districtwide book study for teachers and staff. The book chosen was on the topics of leadership, team empowerment and organizational change aboard a Navy ship, according to Superintendent Kyle Kruse.
Written by Mike Abrashoff, “It’s Your Ship” tells the story of how he took charge of the USS Benfold and improved the overall management and efficiency among the ship and his crew.
He also discusses his tactics of how he made the USS Benfold into one of the most successful ships in the Navy.
Administrators, teachers, custodial workers, bus drivers and staff responded very positively to the book, Kruse said.
“The work environment described in his book is what we’re trying to build at St. Clair and the success they experienced is what we want for our kids,” he said.
During Monday’s lecture, Abrashoff spoke more indepth of his experiences on the USS Benfold, how he was assigned to the ship and his background. He also took questions from faculty and staff, according to Kruse.
At the end, everyone gave Abrashoff a standing ovation, he said.
“It went over really, really well,” Kruse said. “It kicked us off to a good start (of the year).”
