A St. Clair man was arrested Wednesday after St. Clair police found a meth lab in a vehicle with stolen license plates.

Police are searching for the suspected driver who escaped on foot.

Police Chief Bill Hammack said at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday police officers were dispatched to the 400 block of North Lay Street after reports of a light-colored vehicle traveling up and down the road, stopping in front of residences and honking.

Officers later located a light-colored older Chrysler model car at Casey’s General Store. When they attempted to do a traffic stop, the two suspects drove off.

Officers pursued the vehicle along North Commercial, West Springfield, Peacock Road, ending on Elm Tree Court. Hammack said the vehicle crashed into a tree at a dead end on Elm Tree Court.

Both suspects then fled on foot. Police arrested the 39-year-old male passenger. The 35-year-old male driver escaped on foot.

Inside the vehicle, officers found a meth lab in the front passenger seat along with other drug paraphernalia.
