Members of Eric Smith’s fifth-grade class at Edgar Murray Elementary School have been working toward a goal of collecting 1,000 canned goods items to donate to the St. Clair Agape House to use during the holiday season and beyond. Smith said the community service project stemmed from the Leader in Me initiative being instituted in the R-XIII school district this fall. As of the last count, Smith said about 700 cans had been collected by his students and taken to the local shelter. Here, the fifth-graders cheer as they pose with some of the collected canned food items in front of the school’s Leader in Me Seven Habits mural.
