Trash Art

St. Clair Junior High School students Trey Wideman, Suzette Duty and Aleaha Parmely, from left, pose with their “trash art” rendition of the Pablo Picasso painting “The Portrait of Dora Maar” after they won the school’s “Trash Art Wars Competition.” Not pictured is project partner Jake Townsend. In Amanda Butenhoff’s first semester art classes, seventh- and eighth-grade students, working in groups of between two and five, created object sculptures based on one of three Picasso paintings. Students found resources to form their three-dimensional representations. Junior high students picked the best sculpture from each painting, and teachers decided the grand prize winner.
