A total of $16,006.34 was raised during the fourth annual backpack golf tournament Sept. 16, which is about $2,000 more than raised last year.
St. Clair Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and Gray Summit United Methodist Church sponsored the annual backpack golf tournament fundraiser that was held at Meramac Lakes Golf Club.
Carol Hill, backpack chairman, said 25 teams participated in the tournament. Players were given a continental breakfast, a boxed lunch and were served hors d’oeuvres during the awards ceremony.
“It was a great success,” Hill said. “There was a lot of participation.”
There also was a live and silent auction where people bid on a total of 45 items. The biggest auction item were Blues hockey tickets that went for $500, Hill said.
The money raised will be split 50/50 between the churches’ backpack programs. Hill said the funds will support Holy Trinity’s program for four to five months.
Backpack programs provide about 1,000 bags of groceries a month to children in Franklin County. Holy Trinity Lutheran Church provides groceries to 150 kids in St. Clair a week.
Children who receive groceries are those who already receive free and reduced lunch at school. Hill said the bags of groceries are sent to St. Clair Elementary, Edgar Murray Elementary and the Franklin County Co-Op.
“We pack 10 grocery items in a grocery bag, and the teachers in the schools pick them up and hand them out to the kids on Friday,” Hill said.
Next year’s tournament will be Saturday, Sept. 15, at Meramac Lakes Golf Club.
