The St. Clair Historical Museum, 280 Hibbard St., was destroyed by a two-alarm fire on Sunday night.

Crews first responded to the scene at about 9 p.m. and found smoke pouring out from inside the building. The fire was burning inside the structure and soon after appeared through the roof and windows on the second floor.

The structure was engulfed for a period of time.

There was no one inside when the fire broke out, and there were no injuries.

Crews remained on the scene well into the night battling the blaze and cleaning up afterward.

The museum houses the majority of St. Clair's historical information and had been open on Saturday and Sunday for a special exhibit honoring Black History Month.

A few items as well as some of the historical documents were salvaged.

The cause of the fire is not known. Franklin County Arson Investigator Jim Schuhmacher was called to the scene, which is common practice after a loss of this magnitude.
