Two men were killed on Saturday night when they were involved in an accident on eastbound Interstate 44 near the St. Clair rest area.
According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, David A. Winters, 34, of St. Louis, and Millard P. Mitchell, 78, of High Ridge, were pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital Washington and Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan, respectively, following the 8:35 p.m. crash at the 237.6 mile marker of the interstate.
The patrol stated that Mitchell was driving a 1997 GMC Sierra in the wrong direction on the interstate when his pickup struck the front of Winters' eastbound 2006 Nissan Maxima.
Both men had to be extricated from their vehicles by personnel from the St. Clair Fire Protection District before being transported. It is not known how or why Mitchell was driving in the wrong direction.
Winters was wearing a safety belt while Mitchell was not.
