A Franklin County woman suffered serious injuries Wednesday night in a boating accident on the Meramec River.

The Missouri Highway Patrol reported that Tresa J. Kaufman, 48, of Robertsville, was transported from the scene by air ambulance to Mercy Hospital St. Louis for treatment following the 7 p.m. mishap. She was a passenger in a boat operated by Kurt L. Kaufman, 52, of Robertsville.

The patrol said the boat was traveling upstream and struck a dirt embankment when the driver was distracted by an object on the floor.

Tresa Kaufman was injured when she was thrown off balance and struck debris in the boat, according to the preliminary patrol report. At the scene, it appeared injuries included to her head.

The accident happened about 1.5 miles upstream from the River Round Conservation Area off of Old Cove Road east of St. Clair, the patrol said.

A passing boater was flagged down at the scene of the accident by Kurt Kaufman. The woman was transferred to that boat by the two men, and she was taken to the River Round Access boat ramp, where she was stabilized by St. Clair Fire Protection District and ambulance personnel on the boat and then in an ambulance parked at the ramp.

She then was airlifted.

Kurt Kaufman was not injured.
