St. Clair Fire Protection District emergency responders had to extricate two of the three men who seriously were injured in a one-vehicle accident Monday night on Mill Hill Road before they could be transported to St. Louis hospitals.

The injured included the driver of the 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier, Robert R. Lewis, 28, of St. Clair, who later was arrested at a hospital on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, driving with a suspended license and second-degree assault charges.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol report, at 8:55 p.m. Lewis was westbound on Mill Hill Road driving the Cavalier and approaching Bruns Bridge east of St. Clair. He lost control of the vehicle, and it traveled off the right side of the road, up a steep embankment and struck a tree.

The impact of the crash left the car on top of the embankment among some trees almost facing the direction from which it came. It was totaled.

Also suffering serious injuries were Stephen D. Cox, 48, of St. Clair, and Joseph F. Temares, 31, of St. Clair. One of the two passengers remained trapped in the car with Lewis until rescue personnel arrived. The other man was found in the roadway.

None of the three men was wearing safety belts, the patrol stated.

Emergency personnel had to cut away the roof of the Cavalier before the two trapped men could be removed. The extrication took about 30 minutes.

Cox was transported by air ambulance to Mercy Hospital St. Louis. The ambulance landed on Bruns Bridge.

Lewis was transported by St. Clair Ambulance to St. Anthony’s Medical Center in St. Louis.

Temares was taken by Meramec Ambulance to Mercy Hospital St. Louis.

Mill Hill Road was closed for about an hour until the scene was cleared.
