St. Clair R-XIII School District officials said they remain in the dark as to why the high school football field lights went out on consecutive Friday nights during Bulldog varsity football games.

Assistant Superintendent Mark Denbow told board of education members that the district is continuing to look into the situation, but as of Thursday had not yet determined a specific reason why the lights on the visitors side of the field went out during the early stages of the third quarter on both Aug. 30 and Sept. 6.

The school board was updated during its September meeting.

“We thought we had it corrected,” Denbow said. “But then we had the second outage. We really don’t know yet why it has happened.”

Both times, the outage lasted about 30 minutes and occurred at about the same time. Play was suspended each time until full power was restored.

Denbow said an electrician is investigating the situation to determine the cause.

“So far, there have been no red flags,” Denbow said. “We will continue to do more testing so we can find out what’s happening.”

He said the field lights were turned on as a test at about 9:30 a.m. on Thursday and remained on through 6 p.m. “with no problems.”

The assistant superintendent said additional testing was planned for Friday.

One theory is that the recent extreme heat played a part in the outage. During St. Clair’s first two games, the temperature at kickoff was near 90 degrees.

The Bulldogs did not play at home on Friday night, but they will next Friday, Sept. 20. It will be Homecoming.
