A Franklin County man was arrested without incident on Wednesday morning east of Washington following a foot and vehicle chase.

St. Clair Police said Eric Gildehaus, 33, was arrested by Franklin County Sheriff's Office deputies after he led city and county personnel on a chase through parts of St. Clair and then eastbound on Interstate 44. The arrest took place at the I-44 251 mile marker exit east of Washington.

According to St. Clair Police, Gildehaus had active misdemeanor warrants for his arrest. Officers received a tip at about 10 a.m. that he was inside the St. Clair NAPA Auto Parts store on Plaza Drive, and an officer traveled to that location.

The foot chase started inside the store and involved an off-duty Washington police officer. St. Clair police then chased Gildehaus on foot through the nearby Dollar General store and to the St. Clair Budget Lodging motel, where he got in a Chevrolet Camaro and took off.

It is not known why the Washington officer was in St. Clair, how he knew Gildehaus or why he attempted to make an arrest out of his jurisdiction.

The Camaro was driven by a 31-year-old female.

Deputies joined the vehicle chase at the I-44 246 mile marker exit near Union and followed the Camaro until it exited at the Washington exit.

Gildehaus got out of the car and surrendered at that point.
