Local Girl Scouts from Troop 561 will be leading the 2012 St. Clair Lighted Christmas Parade as it makes its way from the high school to the downtown area on Saturday.
Parks and recreation board President Beth Lauer said she asked the local Girl Scouts if they would serve as the color guard for the annual event, and was given a resounding “yes” as an answer.
The parade is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
Local Boy Scouts from Troop 449 also will be a part of the evening’s festivities by serving as elves for Santa Claus, who will be ushered into town near the end of the parade.
“This should be another fun event for people to attend,” Lauer said. “I’m excited about it again this year. I hope we have a great turnout and have streets lined with people watching the parade.”
The parade route will be the same — High School Drive to Bardot Street to East Springfield Road to Main Street. The end will be at Kitchell Avenue, but activities will continue at Main Street Park.
There, shortly after the parade ends, Santa will make his way to the St. Clair caboose, where he and parade grand marshals Rick and Letha Childers will flip the switch for the ceremonial train car lighting.
In addition, the Edgar Murray Elementary School choir will sing near the gazebo. Santa then will sit inside the gazebo and welcome children to sit on his lap.
Parents may take pictures of their youngsters at that time. The city is not providing a photographer.
Popcorn and hot chocolate will be served.
Individuals, groups, clubs and organizations still are encouraged to participate in the parade.
Entry forms are available at city hall or the St. Clair License Office. Forms also are available on the city’s website.
It costs five canned food items to join the parade cast, and 10 cans if the entry wants to be eligible for judging.
Judging this year will take place in front of The St. Clair Missourian office, 395 S. Main St. Judges will be positioned there so if any entry wants to perform anything special, participants will be able to do so at that location.
At The Missourian, each parade entry will be asked to stop for a short time so the judging can take place.
Mayor Ron Blum also will select a Mayor’s Choice float winner.
Recognition also will be given to the group that collects the most canned goods. Food will be given to the St. Clair Cops for Cans food drive.
A canned food collection station will be set up near the caboose after the parade.
Parade participants may begin setting up and lining up along High School Drive on the SCHS campus beginning at 3 p.m. All entries are asked to be in place and ready to go by 5:30 p.m.
All floats must be lighted.

During the November park board meeting, Rick Childers informed board members that the proposed park department budget should end with a slight surplus.
St. Clair’s Board of Aldermen have conducted three workshops in recent weeks as it works on creating a balanced budget. A final 2013 budget was approved on Monday.
Money is in the park board budget to hire a part-time recreation director. Monies also are included to construct a nine-hold disc golf course at Evergreen Park and provide additional trail lighting at Orchard Park.
The budget also includes the $4,500 fireworks allowance to provide a show similar to this year’s.
