Two women were injured, one seriously, when they were involved in a two-vehicle accident Saturday evening on Dry Branch Road west of St. Clair.
The accident took place at 6 p.m. on June 15.
According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, a 2004 Cadillac CTS driven by Jedediah D. Elliott, 34, of Sullivan, was westbound on Dry Branch Road about one mile west of Highway WW when it collided with an eastbound 2008 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Nichole L. Thebeau, 40, of Union. The vehicles hit head-on or nearly head-on when Elliott failed to negotiate a curve in the road, the patrol stated in its report.
Carol L. Busse, 49, of St. Clair, who was a passenger in the Cadillac, had to be extricated from the car before she was transported by St. Clair Ambulance personnel to Mercy Hospital Washington. It took St. Clair Fire Protection District firefighters several minutes to cut away the roof of the vehicle before the woman could be removed. Her injuries were listed as serious.
Thebeau, whose injuries were listed as moderate, also was transported to Mercy Hospital Washington.
Everyone involved was wearing a safety belt. Elliott was not injured.
The impact of the crash pushed the pickup to the shoulder of the eastbound lane of Dry Branch Road. The Cadillac came to a stop perpendicular to the road with its front crossing over the centerline. The road was closed until the accident was cleared.
Both vehicles were totaled.
There were reports at the scene that a fourth individual may have been riding in the pickup, but apparently that was not the case.
Elliott later was arrested for felony second-degree assault and for suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
