St. Clair residents will pay 3 percent more for city water and sewer services in 2014 after the board of aldermen passed an ordinance approving the increase.

The action was taken during the board’s meeting on Monday night.

The increases were reflected in the city’s 2014 budget, which also was approved during the same meeting.

There was no discussion before the ordinance unanimously was passed.

According to documentation provided during the meeting, the new rates, effective Jan. 1, will include a basic water charge of $8.20 per month for 0 to 99 gallons used.

Rates then increase per the amount of water consumed.

Residences that use between 100 and 5,000 gallons of water each month will be charged the $8.20 plus an extra $3.28 for every 1,000 gallons used. From 5,001 to 20,000 gallons, the water bill will be $8.20 plus $4.65 per 1,000 gallons used.

If 20,001 to 100,000 gallons are needed, the rate will be $8.20 plus $4.37 per 1,000 gallons. Residents who use in excess of 100,000 gallons each month will be charged $8.20 plus $3.01 per 1,000 gallons used.

The sewer rate schedule is somewhat simpler.

The basic monthly charge is $7.88 for 0 to 99 gallons of water used.

Households that consume 100 or more gallons in a month will be assessed the $7.88 plus an additional $3.55 per 1,000 gallons used.
