Emergency personnel work on extricating one of the individuals involved in the accident on Interstate 44 at the mile marker 240 exit at St. Clair Sunday afternoon.

An accident at about 3 p.m. Sunday closed eastbound Interstate 44 at the St. Clair mile marker 240 exit.

It appeared two vehicles were involved in the crash, including a pickup truck towing a camper. Two individuals had to be extricated from that pickup. Both were transported by St. Clair Ambulance to area hospitals.

The extent of their injuries was not known. The condition of the driver of the other pickup also was not known, although it did not appear he suffered serious injuries.

The pickup hauling the camper ended up on its top on the median cable between the eastbound and westbound lanes of the interstate. The camper was destroyed. A few pieces of the camper were strewn across the eastbound lanes of I-44.

It appeared both vehicles were westbound on the highway when the accident occurred.

Westbound traffic was reduced to one lane until the scene was cleared.

St. Clair police and fire personnel were on the scene.

No other information was available, including how the accident happened.
