Aldermen gave final approval Feb. 6 to a conditional use permit (CUP) to open a gun and ammo store in downtown Pacific.

Michael Callahan, owner of AX2 Sporting Arms, is renovating the former bank building at 115 W. St. Louis St.

The new retail store also will offer high-end fishing gear.

Alderman Nick Chlebowski told aldermen that the planning and zoning commission had unanimously approved the CUP.

Chlebowski described the new venture as high-end retail that fits the character of Pacific and will be good for downtown. He also said the store will bring significant sales tax revenue to the city.

Callahan restored the former bank building, which in recent years was the home of Noonan Appraisers, to its original appearance by removing partitions and paneling. He also removed the drop ceiling to return the original skylights.
