The Pacific Tourism Commission wants to run an advertising program that promotes the city as a place to visit, attend civic events, shop and dine.

The commission approved an ad campaign in the Washington Missourian for a series of advertisements to promote different areas, activities or tourism venues for a six month period. Cost of the campaign would be $6,000.

The content of the ads would be developed to showcase the three shopping districts — downtown, East Osage and West Osage.

Other ads would showcase the parks, which offer visitor attractions such as the Civil War cannon in Blackburn Park, the Civil War plaques in Blackburn Park and Pacific Station Plaza.

Civic public events, including the upcoming Christmas on the Plaza, also would be featured.

Commission members named Dennis Oliver as the member to work with The Missourian advertising team to develop and approve the content of the ads.

The action took place at the Nov. 4 meeting following a lengthy discussion about the content of the ads and hopes for increased presence of Pacific in The Missourian.

Baker said eventually the commission would like to see the Pacific news pages in the The Missourian as a stand-alone section, similar to those of St. Clair and Union.
