The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident early Tuesday that prompted a lockdown at the Nike Elementary School south of Catawissa.

The sheriff’s received a call about 8:15 a.m. of shots fired near the school. The caller said that he had been approached by a man who stated members of the Mexican mafia chased and shot at him.

Deputies suspected that the 41-year-old man was under the influence of narcotics or was having mental issues and had been involved in an argument with several individuals at his residence on Central Street just north of the school about 4 a.m.

One individual reported being assaulted with a knife, but he refused to press charges.

It is alleged that the man poured gasoline on the residence, but fled to where he eventually made contact with the person who contacted the sheriff’s office.

The man later was transported to an area hospital by his father.

It was determined that shots were not fired in the area, and the lockdown at the school was lifted.

Narcotics officers were called in and found drugs and three weapons in a shed.

Two individuals at the residence are convicted felons, the sheriff’s office said.
