Six local Scouts in a co-ed Venture Crew have spent the past several weeks preparing for a week of sailing lessons on Lake Huron, Mich.

After years of going on Scouting events with their son Zach, now 17, Steve and Lorrie Myers started the Venture Crew when their daughter Lindsey turned 14.

New Beginning Lutheran Church, located at 791 New Beginning Drive (off Hogan Road), Pacific, agreed to sponsor Venture Crew 2424, which now has 22 members between the ages of 14 and 20.

“Only six will go on the sailing venture because of the busy schedules of families,” Myers said. “Some have sporting schedules this summer.”

To begin preparation for deep water sailing, the Scouts spent a week at the Swift Explorer Base on the S-F Ranch in Potosi where Sea Scoutmaster Wayne Hastings came down from Port Huron to teach the basics of boats and sailing.

Scouts learned the basics of sails, rigging, how to sail and duties of members of the crew on racing boat.

Each of the Scouts had the opportunity to go out onto the 200-acre lake on a Sunfish, a Hobie Cat and a Mutineer, with one of the sailing masters.

“Each Scout got to go out with one of the sailors,” Myers said.

On Lake Huron, the Scouts will spend four days on a 35-foot J Boat, captained by Hastings.

Myers describes the sailing venture as the trip of a lifetime.

“Sailing is something that I always wanted to do, but just never had the opportunity before,” Myers said. “When this opportunity came up, Lorrie and I jumped on it.”

Six Scouts will make the trip — Lindsey and Zach Myers, Ashley and Sydney Hill, Alex Bodi and Alex Rossomanno.

In addition to Steve and Lorrie Myers, Shelly Hill and Laura Rasmussen, New Beginnings Church youth coach, will accompany the Scouts.
