Patrons of the Tri-County Community Senior Center will be the recipients of the latest Eagle Scout project in Pacific with a new deck.

This follows a practice that has enhanced the city’s parks with athletic field signs, walking trails and a replica Civil War cannon in recent years.

The center is located at 800 West Union.

When Life Scout Ethan Wood, Troop 442, Union, said it was time to start thinking about a project to earn Eagle Scout rank, his grandmother, Donna McMullin of Pacific, told him she had an idea.

Her friends at the senior center like to sit outside in good weather for a game of cards after lunch, but there was no shady place for them to sit. She showed Ethan the creek line in back of the senior center that was filled with brush.

The seniors would love to have a little patio there, she said, with all the brush gone.

Ethan liked the idea, so he began the step-by-step process it takes to get his Eagle Scout project approved. He started with Tim Baker, senior center board president.

“Mr. Baker said the seniors wanted a deck beneath the trees and I was the first Scout to come forward and offer to do it, so, he said I was the one,” Ethan said.

The next step was a bonus for the 15-year-old, who hopes to become an architect. With some guidance from his drafting teacher, Mr. Wright at Union High School, he used a computer CAD program to create a drawing for a 15- by 15-foot deck with railings on three sides and a ramp from the paved area.

Ethan took his idea to the Eagle Scout board, where it was approved, and to the Pacific building department where he was issued a permit.

He designed the deck to sit under the high trees on the creek bank, and enlisted his parents, Timothy and Susan Wood, and some of his friends to clear all the underbrush along the tree line and began fund-raising efforts to raise the estimated $2,000 needed for materials for his deck.

Once he accumulates the materials, he has a commitment of six adults and five to 10 fellow Scouts and friends to provide the labor.

In order to accomplish his goal, Ethan will depend on donations of cash and supplies like building materials such as wood, nails, tools and more.

Anyone who would like to donate to this community cause can purchase a gift card at Pacific Lumber Company, purchase tools, nails or materials, or visit Bank Star and donate money to Account: 192135299, Routing Number: 081003275.

The funds will go into the Eagle Scout account for the creek side deck project.

Ethan will pick up any items that are purchased with gift cards.
